Travel information about Alabama

The word "Alabama" means "tribal town" in the language of the Native Americans of the Creek tribe. The state's highest point above sea level is Cheaha Mountain, at 2,405 feet. Oddly enough, Alabama's state horse is the rocking horse! The state has been the site of several notable "firsts": Alabama was the first state to declare Christmas a legal holiday, in 1836; the Confederate flag was designed and first flown here in 1861; the world's first electric trolley system was introduced in Montgomery in 1886; and the rocket that first took humans to the moon was designed in Huntsville. Escape to an Alabama inn in Auburn or Montgomery bed and breakfast for a lodging experience consistent with the state's rich heritage.
